Paris Honors David Bowie with Street Naming on His 77th Birth Anniversary

Published January 8, 2024

The City of Lights is now shining a little brighter in honor of British music legend, David Bowie. Paris has dedicated a street to the iconic figure, christening it 'rue David-Bowie' in recognition of his immeasurable influence on culture. The dedication coincides with what would have been Bowie's 77th birthday, adding to the sentimentality of the tribute.

Legacy Cemented on Parisian Streets

The announcement to name a street after David Bowie was made back in 2020 by Jérôme Coumet, the mayor of Paris' 13th arrondissement. This new tribute is not just about marking a location on the map; it's a testament to the deep love and respect that Bowie has garnered over the years, even after his passing in 2016 due to cancer.

Located in the southeastern part of Paris, the street now bearing Bowie's name is aptly positioned between two modern office complexes, and some of the city's significant cultural institutions, including Le Monde and L’Obs.

Rue David-Bowie not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the area but also serves a practical purpose by bridging avenue Pierre-Mendes-France and boulevard de l’Hopital. This strategic placement near Austerlitz train station and the Pitie-Salpetriere Hospital ensures that the memory of Bowie will continue to resonate with the daily ebb and flow of Parisians.

Celebration of an Icon

The inauguration ceremony offered more than just a street-naming. It featured a concert and an exhibition, both of which paid homage to Bowie's profound legacy. His first performance in Paris dates back to 1965 - a milestone since it marked his first show outside the United Kingdom, which set the stage for his global stardom.

David Bowie's contributions to music with timeless tracks like 'Space Oddity' and 'Let’s Dance,' as well as to fashion and culture, have left an indelible mark. By embedding his name into the walkways of Paris, the city enshrines his innovative spirit and enduring impact for generations to come.
