Billie Eilish and Harry Styles Music Makes a Comeback on TikTok

Published May 2, 2024

As of May 2, 2024, fans of Billie Eilish and Harry Styles have a reason to celebrate. The two pop sensations' music is set to make a return on the popular social media app TikTok. This update comes after a successful resolution between Universal Music Group (UMG) and TikTok.

End of the Licensing Dispute

In February, controversy erupted when UMG pulled its catalog from TikTok, featuring artists like Taylor Swift, Eilish, and Styles. The dispute was about fair compensation for music rights. UMG held that TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, was not meeting their price demands. While TikTok disagreed with these claims, the stalemate resulted in music being pulled from the platform.

Despite these issues, by early April, Swift's songs were reintroduced on TikTok, aligning closely with the release of her new album. The striking coincidence suggested potential strategic negotiation tactics from UMG.

TikTok's Rising Influence in the Music Industry

Many major record companies have criticized TikTok for what they perceive as inadequate compensation for the use of their artists' music. However, with an audience of roughly 1.4 billion users globally, TikTok remains a crucial player in the industry for artist exposure and success. Other record labels, such as Warner Music Group and Sony Music, have acknowledged this by entering into their licensing agreements with the platform.
