A Harmonious Union: US and Japanese Forces Celebrate With Music at Tokyo Budokan

On November 17th, 2023, the renowned Tokyo Budokan played host to an extraordinary musical event as members of the US Army, US Marines Bands, and Japanese Taiko drum artists came together for a captivating performance. This event not only showcased the harmonious blending of various musical traditions but also held a deeper significance for the performers involved.

End of an Era for the USARJ Band

For the current members of the USARJ Band, this occasion was especially poignant. Established in 1957, the band performed its final act in the historic Budokan, which has a seating capacity of 14,000. Performing at this venue marked the conclusion of a significant chapter in the band's history.

A Festival Rooted in Tradition

The Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) Marching Festival has been a long-standing tradition since its inception in 1963, with Budokan serving as its almost annual location since 1973. Throughout the years, this festival has grown to include an array of international military bands. Participants have included ensembles from the U.S. Army, Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps, as well as bands from countries such as Australia, France, Germany, India, Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
