Disney and 'Oppenheimer' Lead Oscar Nominations as 'Barbie' Sees Less Recognition

Published January 23, 2024

In a surprising turn for the film industry, the 'Barbie' movie emerged as the highest-earning film of 2023, setting new records for its first weekend and overall cinema run. Despite this financial success and frequent appearances at numerous awards ceremonies, 'Barbie' did not claim the title of the most Academy Award nominations this year.

'Barbie' Versus 'Oppenheimer': Box Office Hits and Academy Awards Showdown

'Barbie' and 'Oppenheimer' released simultaneously, both making a significant splash at the box office. While 'Barbie' achieved greater ticket sales, 'Oppenheimer' has been a powerhouse throughout the awards season, including nabbing five Golden Globes.

'Oppenheimer' stood at the forefront of the 96th Academy Award nominations, garnering 13 nods. The figures behind 'Oppenheimer' are impressive, with earnings of $326.1 million in the US and $1.45 billion globally. Despite its financial accomplishments, 'Barbie' received eight Oscar nominations, falling short of 'Oppenheimer's' acclaim.

Distinguished Nominations and Historic Moments at the Oscars

Other notable films in the Awards race are 'Poor Things' from Walt Disney Company's Searchlight with 11 nominations, and 'Killers of the Flower Moon' produced by Apple Inc., which secured 10 nominations. The nominations for 'Barbie' were overshadowed by the absence of Greta Gerwig in the Best Director category and Margot Robbie in the Best Actress category. The film, however, did receive recognition for two original songs. The Oscars also noted milestones, including Martin Scorsese becoming the oldest Best Director nominee at 81 and Lily Gladstone being the first Native American nominated for Best Actress.

Apple, Comcast, and Disney all prominently featured in the nominations, with Disney taking the lead with a total of 20 nominations, while Comcast and Netflix each secured 18. Hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, the Academy Awards are set to air on ABC, March 10.

A highlight of this year's nominations include three films directed by women in the Best Picture category, though only Justine Triet for 'Anatomy of a Fall' earned a Best Director nod. The nominations also featured several key categories such as Best Picture, Best Director, and acting awards, recognizing a diverse range of talents and storytellings.
