International Guitar Night Returns With a Stellar Roster

Published February 22, 2024

When it comes to marrying pure guitar talent with exciting collaborations, International Guitar Night (IGN) is a unique event that consistently delivers a spellbinding experience. Emphasizing not just solo performances but also the chemistry between different artists, IGN has reached its 24th year, promising an array of unforgettable pairings. This year's event comes to the Bay Area during its extensive North American tour, stopping at three iconic venues including San Francisco’s Herbst Theatre on February 22, Livermore’s Bankhead Theater on February 23, and the Carriage House Theatre at Montalvo Arts Center in Saratoga on February 24.

Unveiling a Diverse Musical Ensemble

Brian Gore, IGN's visionary founder, has carefully selected a group of supremely talented guitarists for the latest performances. The lineup boasts the likes of Italian sensation Luca Stricagnoli, known for his stunning skills on self-invented multi-neck guitars. Stricagnoli's performances have captivated vast online audiences. Adding to the international flair is Vietnam's Thu Le, a guitar prodigy who began her journey at age seven, becoming the youngest musician at Hanoi’s National Conservatory of Music.

Introducing a fresh face to the tour, Australian slide guitarist Minnie Marks stands out with her rootsy style, having earned acclaim by winning the Bluesfest Busking Competition in 2011. Marks finds a kindred spirit in Brazilian virtuoso Marco Pereira, a seasoned Guitar Night participant whose mastery has played a significant role in shaping IGN into the global phenomenon it is today.

The Synergy of Styles

Pereira, a Sao Paulo native, carries on the distinguished tradition of Brazilian guitar greats with a style deeply rooted in jazz, yet unmistakably Brazilian. He first graced the Guitar Night in its third season and marvels at how the event has grown over the years. An evening with IGN includes solo performances followed by dynamic collaborations. Pereira himself has several Brazilian pieces prepared for his solo segments, while during the tour, he has developed a piece with Marks, blending Brazilian and roots influences in a harmonious performance.

Every musician brings their unique background to the stage, enhancing the richness of the event. Marks, for instance, is venturing into Brazilian rhythms under Pereira's guidance, showcasing the organic fusion of different guitar styles and cultures. The event format has proven to be a successful formula, fostering a celebratory environment where each guitarist showcases solo pieces before coming together in various pairings, culminating in a grand finale featuring all participants.

An Evolving Platform for Guitarists

Gore, who started IGN back in 1995, has evolved the gathering from a strategic ploy to fill venues into a powerhouse event where audiences are not only entertained but also exposed to an eclectic mix of guitar mastery. IGN's rotating cast has seen the likes of jazz, classical, and world musicians share the spotlight, effectively bridging different musical worlds for the audience. While Gore himself has taken a step back from Guitar Night performances, focusing instead on his singer-songwriter career, he remains the orchestrator behind the scenes, ensuring that the marriage of emerging talents like Marks and acclaimed veterans like Pereira continues to enchant and evolve with each performance. Pereira, now a retiree from teaching at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, reflects on the project's success and hints that this tour might be his final large-scale endeavor.
