Ryan Gosling Shares Disappointment Over Oscar Snubs for Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig

Published January 24, 2024

Ryan Gosling, the acclaimed actor who earned an Oscar nomination for his role as Ken in the hit film Barbie, has publicly expressed his disappointment regarding the film's Oscar snubs. His co-star Margot Robbie, who played the titular character, and the film's director, Greta Gerwig, were notably left out of their respective categories at the prestigious awards ceremony.

Gosling's Reverence for Robbie and Gerwig

In a heartfelt statement, Gosling, 43, emphasized the significant contributions both Robbie, 33, and Gerwig, 40, made to the film's success. He articulated that one cannot exist without the other, stating, 'There is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie.'

He continued to highlight their indispensable work, 'No recognition would be possible for anyone on the film without their talent, grit and genius. To say that I'm disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement.'

Recognition and Nominations

The snub has sparked discussions across social media, with some attributing the lack of nominations for Robbie and Gerwig to the very themes of feminism that Barbie addresses. Despite this oversight, Barbie has garnered nominations in other areas, including Best Picture - with Robbie as a producer - and an Original Song nod for 'I’m Just Ken.'

Gosling appreciated his own nomination but noted the irony of his solo acknowledgment when stating, 'Their work should be recognized along with the other very deserving nominees.' The actor also extended congratulations to America Ferrera, his co-star who received a Best Supporting Actress nomination.

Previous Accolades

Both Robbie and Gerwig have a history of recognition by the Academy, with Robbie nominated for her roles in I, Tonya and Bombshell, and Gerwig for her directorial work on Lady Bird and as a writer for Little Women. This year, though missed for director and lead actress categories, both are nominated for the film’s adapted screenplay alongside Noah Baumbach.

The conversation continues on the film’s impact and the Academy's decision, bringing to light discussions concerning the film industry's recognition of women's achievements in prominent roles.
