Melbourne in Advanced Talks to Host ABBA's $80M 3D Virtual Concert

Published December 17, 2023

The critically acclaimed 3D virtual concert ABBA Voyage might soon make its debut in Melbourne, as discussions between the Victorian government and the show's producers have reportedly reached an advanced stage. This innovative concert experience could potentially set its stage in Melbourne after Sydney declined to host the event.

Exploring New Grounds

After taking London by storm with a purpose-built auditorium designed specifically for the holographic extravaganza featuring hits like Dancing Queen and Money, Money, Money, the ABBA Voyage executives are scouting suitable locations in Melbourne to replicate their success. Michael Bolingbroke, CEO and executive producer of ABBA Voyage, along with industry magnates like Paul Dainty, president of TEG Dainty, which has the option to produce the concert in Australia, are part of the ongoing conversations.

State-of-the-Art Holographic Technology

The production uses advanced technology to create a high-fidelity holographic performance of the Swedish pop legends, accompanied by live musicians. The success of ABBA Voyage is notable, breaking records since its London premiere and with plans for global expansion, as indicated by Universal Music Group chairman Lucian Grainge.

Economic Impact and Funding Challenges

Hosting the ABBA Voyage comes with an $80 million investment required for a custom auditorium and high-tech LED screens. Financial backers are in the process of discussing cost-sharing among Visit Victoria, ABBA Voyage, local investors, and TEG. Business Sydney had lobbied for the concert, projecting a substantial economic boost, but was ultimately turned down by NSW's Arts Minister John Graham.

ABBA's Phenomenal Global Appeal

ABBA's global following has made Australia a top contender for hosting the concert, with the recent revival of the ABBA musical Mamma Mia! concluding its Melbourne run. The holographic concert has seen over a million attendees in London, with shows consistently selling out at their 3,000 capacity venue.
