George Michael Celebrated with Commemorative UK Coin

Published February 27, 2024

The United Kingdom's Royal Mint has issued a tribute to the late George Michael, commemorating the iconic British singer-songwriter with a specially crafted collectible coin. The design features Michael donning his well-known sunglasses and serves as an ode to his influential 1987 solo single, Faith.

Endorsed by the estate of George Michael, the coin was brought to life by the creative hands of artist and sculptor Sandra Deiana. It marks a respectful nod to a storied career that began with the pop duo WHAM! and evolved into Michael becoming one of the top-selling solo artists globally.

Rebecca Morgan, the Director of Collector Services at The Royal Mint, expressed elation over the release, noting the universal love for George Michael and the significance of commemorating his impact on music and style.

George Michael ascended to fame in the 1980s as part of Wham! and continued to mesmerize the world with his solo prowess until his untimely passing on Christmas Day in 2016. His festive hit with Wham!, titled Last Christmas, attained the revered 'Christmas Number 1' status on the UK charts in December, 39 years post-release, demonstrating his lasting appeal.

The Royal Mint's 'Music Legends' series, which has previously celebrated other musical powerhouses such as David Bowie, Elton John, and Queen, now enshrines George Michael in numismatic history. This collectible piece is open for purchase, adding to a lineage of coins that celebrate the artistic feats of music's greatest figures.
