Glastonbury Fans React to Neil Young Headliner Announcement
Neil Young has been confirmed as a headliner for Glastonbury 2025, sparking mixed reactions among fans. The iconic music festival will take place at Worthy Farm in Pilton and has already revealed Rod Stewart as one of its performers for the Sunday Legends Slot.
There had been much anticipation about who would fill the important headlining positions for 2025, especially since this will be the festival's last event before a planned year off in 2026. Initially, Neil Young announced he would not perform due to concerns that the festival felt "like a corporate turn-off." However, just days later, he took to his website to share that he had changed his mind and would indeed be appearing at the festival.
Young stated, "Due to an error in the information received, I had decided to not play the Glastonbury festival, which I always have loved. Happily, the festival is now back on our itinerary and we look forward to playing! Hope to see you there!" This was followed by confirmation from festival organiser Emily Eavis.
Social media quickly filled with fans reacting to the surprise announcement. Many were excited by the news, celebrating Young’s involvement after the previous turmoil. One user expressed joy with the tweet, "Woooo hoo. Glad it’s been resolved. Happy days!" Another person noted that Young reversing his decision shows that even legends can change their minds when the facts align. They added, "June just got a whole lot more exciting for festival-goers!"
Some fans noted how Young’s announcement coincided with the release of a new Bob Dylan biopic, enhancing the celebration of legendary artists in 2025. One fan tweeted, "The Bob Dylan film A Complete Unknown hitting cinemas, and Neil Young confirmed as a headliner. I love that two of the all-time great singer-songwriters are getting such wide exposure in 2025. I’m here for it!"
However, not everyone was pleased with Young's confirmation. Some fans expressed disappointment, arguing that Young was not a big enough name to top the festival's line-up. Comments included, "Imagine queuing online for hours, paying obscene amounts of money to then be told that Neil Young is headlining Glastonbury. Fuming." Others pointed out their frustration with the festival focusing on older artists rather than providing a platform for new talent.
Some negative reactions highlighted a perceived trend of aging performers being selected for headlining spots. A fan remarked, "Glastonbury claiming forward thinking and 50/50 splits but keep bringing out old men." Another added, "Rod Stewart, now Neil Young at #glastonburyfestival this year… It seems old guys do rule!"
Neil Young's upcoming performance will mark a return to Glastonbury after he last headlined the Pyramid Stage in 2009. His appearance in 2025 was particularly anticipated as he had previously been scheduled to play 12 years earlier but withdrew due to an injury.
As of now, only Neil Young and Rod Stewart have been officially confirmed as headliners, although Nile Rodgers & Chic were also mentioned as part of the line-up. Speculation continues about other artists that may perform, with names like Olivia Rodrigo, Sam Fender, The 1975, Taylor Swift, and Stevie Wonder regularly appearing in conversations.
Tickets for Glastonbury 2025 sold out in just 32 minutes at the end of 2024, utilizing a new queue system for sales. Resale tickets are expected to become available in the spring just before the full line-up announcement, typically occurring in March. Given the high demand, these resale tickets are likely to sell quickly as well.
