Elton John Embraces Humor at the 2025 Golden Globe Awards

Elton John showcased his sense of humor during the 2025 Golden Globe Awards, which took place on Sunday. The music icon was joined by fellow performer Brandi Carlile as they presented the award for Best Original Film Score.

The award went to acclaimed musicians Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross for their work on the score for Challengers, known for its vibrant electronic beats.

Elton, who is 77 years old, opened his speech with a self-deprecating joke about his eyesight, which he had spoken about suffering from since July of the previous year. "There's been a lot of stories about my regressive eyesight, and I just wanted to reassure everyone that it's not as bad as it seems," he told the audience at The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, which was hosted by Emmy-nominated comedian Nikki Glaser.

Continuing with the humor, he added, "So, I’m thrilled to be here with my co-host... Rihanna!" This misidentification drew laughter from the audience, while Brandi responded gracefully before starting her own remarks.

Brandi expressed appreciation for the emotional depth that film scores can bring to movies, likening them to conversations between the music and the audience.

After their banter, Elton and Brandi announced that the honor for Best Original Film Score went to Reznor and Ross. The two musicians shared a warm hug on stage, highlighting their shared success within the industry.

Elton looked dapper in a black tuxedo paired with a black shirt, while Brandi contrasted him in a stylish cream-colored tuxedo featuring a lengthy shawl lapel and a cream waistcoat beneath a tie-less white shirt.

Elton was later seen at his table alongside his husband, David Furnish, with Brandi and her wife, Catherine Shepherd, also attending the event. David sported a matching tie-free black tuxedo.

During the evening, it was revealed that Elton had faced challenges with his eyesight, initially disclosed during an interview in July 2024 on Good Morning America. He stated he had lost sight in his right eye due to an infection contracted in France, and his left eye wasn't in the best condition either. Despite this, he maintained a positive outlook, saying there was hope for recovery, although it had made creating music difficult. "I can do things like this, but going into the studio is tough because I can’t see lyrics," he explained. However, his witty appearance at the Golden Globes showed that he remains dedicated to entertaining his fans, even amidst personal challenges.

The 2025 Golden Globe Awards recognized various films and performances, with Emilia Pérez winning four awards, including Best Film - Musical or Comedy. The awards ceremony celebrated a night filled with talent and emotional speeches, leaving a lasting impression on all attendees.
