CMAT Celebrates The Last Dinner Party's Impact on Women in Indie Music

Published March 2, 2025

CMAT spoke at the BRITs 2025 about how the success of The Last Dinner Party is signaling a new era for women in the music industry.

The Irish singer-songwriter, known as Ciara Mary-Alice Thompson, shared her thoughts while walking the red carpet at the event on March 1. She expressed her admiration for the artists nominated this year, especially The Last Dinner Party, highlighting their inspirational influence on women.

The band won the BRITs Rising Star award last year and was nominated for four awards this time, ultimately taking home the Best New Artist award. During their acceptance speech, they emphasized the importance of supporting grassroots music venues.

"I’m very openly a big fan of The Last Dinner Party, they’re such a beacon for me," CMAT stated. "In the past, there were hardly any women visible in indie music, especially at times when the genre was struggling. The industry failed to see the potential of women to rejuvenate it. To now see a lot of talented women, not only participating but excelling and winning prestigious awards, truly makes my heart sing."

At the BRIT Awards, CMAT also reflected on the rise of female pop artists in recent years like Charli XCX, Taylor Swift, Sabrina Carpenter, and Chappell Roan. She explained that the huge response from fans is connected to the long history of women facing obstacles in the industry. "Once those barriers start to come down, there’s a flood of talent and creativity. Many artists like me and The Last Dinner Party were inspired by the women we wanted to see when we were younger, and we aim to motivate other girls to pursue their dreams," she expressed.

CMAT is also gearing up to release new music soon, having spent significant time from September to December crafting new tracks in New York City. "I lost my mind working there but the music sounds fantastic," she revealed. "I focused on creating songs that translate well to live shows, as my band plays a key role in my performances and overall success in the UK music scene. I designed an album that empowers both them and me."

Furthermore, she shared her excitement about her upcoming shows with fellow artist Sam Fender, admitting she hasn't had the chance to meet him yet. However, she is already a fan of his recent album 'People Watching'. "I adored it even before it was released, from the little snippets he posted online. It’s beautiful," CMAT said.

This upcoming music will be her first release since her sophomore album 'Crazymad, For Me' in 2023, which received a four-star review. The review praised her for creating a brilliant blend of humor and emotional depth in her music.

Meanwhile, The Last Dinner Party, during their time on the BRITs red carpet, discussed their highly anticipated follow-up to the debut album 'Prelude To Ecstasy', highlighting the need for increased conversations surrounding artists' mental health.
