Plan to Revitalize Walsh Bay for Sydney Festival

Published January 1, 2025

This year, the Sydney Festival is set to enhance the nightlife experience in the Walsh Bay area. Last year, many festival-goers were disappointed when they had to move indoors at 10pm after performances. Responding to these concerns, the NSW government has decided to ease restrictions for the event.

Extended Trading Hours for the Moonshine Bar

For the upcoming three-week festival, the Moonshine Bar, located at Walsh Bay, will be allowed to operate both indoors and outdoors until 2am. This is made possible due to changes in planning conditions aimed at boosting the evening economy in Sydney and transforming Walsh Bay into a vibrant arts and cultural venue akin to London’s West End.

Government's Vision for Walsh Bay

The NSW government recognizes that Walsh Bay has been limited by strict regulations in the past but sees great potential for it to become a premier performance hub in the southern hemisphere. Arts, Music and Night-time Economy Minister John Graham emphasized that the area is home to some of Australia’s finest theatre, music, and dance companies. With a nearby metro station added to the mix, the full potential of Walsh Bay will be on display during the Sydney Festival.

Changes to Nightlife Regulations

As part of its goal to revive Sydney’s nightlife, the government has launched several reforms. These include preventing single residents from shutting down businesses due to noise complaints and lifting restrictions that required local residents to become members to access specific clubs.

Exciting Activities Planned for the Festival

This year, the Walsh Bay area will again feature as the Sydney Festival hub, under the name "The Thirsty Mile." Visitors can look forward to a mix of free and ticketed music concerts, art displays, and theatre performances starting this Saturday. The City of Sydney Council has approved the use of several piers and spaces for various activities, food trucks, and pop-up art installations for the festival over the next three years.

Noise Management and Community Concerns

While the festival aims to create excitement, there have been concerns from a local resident about noise levels. The complaint highlighted that although daytime noise is manageable, late-night sounds disrupt their rest. Plans to mitigate these concerns will include turning off background music outdoors at 10pm and ceasing amplified music in event spaces by 2am.

Benefits of Improved Accessibility

Chris Tooher, the Sydney Festival director, expressed enthusiasm about the new metro station at Barangaroo and the updated planning rules that will allow guests to enjoy both indoor and outdoor installations late into the warm summer evenings.
