Wheesung: A Tribute to Korea's R&B Pioneer
Wheesung, an R&B singer known for his soulful voice and impact on the genre's popularity in the 2000s, passed away on Monday at the age of 43. He was found unresponsive at his home in the Gwangjin District of Seoul. Authorities reported that his mother discovered him and emergency responders were called, but he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
His agency, Tajoy Entertainment, confirmed his passing in a statement. They expressed condolences and mentioned that he was found in cardiac arrest. The agency also informed that funeral arrangements would be private, in line with his family's wishes and would occur when they are ready.
The police are looking into the circumstances of his death and will request an autopsy by the National Forensic Service. They noted there were no signs of foul play or forced entry at the scene.
Wheesung, whose real name was Choi Whee-sung, began his music career in 1999 as part of the group A4. He launched his solo career in 2002 with the album 'Like a Movie', which showcased his unique R&B and ballad style. The title track 'Can't You' quickly made him a star, earning him top spots on various music charts.
Throughout his career, Wheesung released many hits, including 'With Me' (2003), 'Insomnia' (2009), and 'Even Thought of Marriage' (2010), establishing himself as one of Korea's leading R&B artists. He was not only a talented singer but also a prolific songwriter. He penned lyrics for popular K-pop songs, including Younha’s 'Password 486' (2007) and TWICE’s 'Dance the Night Away' (2018).
In addition to his songwriting, Wheesung was an accomplished producer. For instance, he produced Ailee’s debut single 'Heaven' in 2012, which marked the beginning of her successful career.
Wheesung’s journey was also marked by personal struggles and legal issues. He faced investigation for alleged propofol use while serving in the military in 2013 but was later cleared. However, he was indicted in 2019 for habitual use of the substance and received a suspended prison sentence in 2021, along with a fine. He had spoken publicly about his battles with depression, panic disorder, and insomnia, revealing that he was diagnosed with chronic depression in 2005.
His untimely death has left a significant impact on the Korean entertainment industry. Wheesung was still active in music and had plans to perform in a concert with fellow singer KCM, which has now been canceled following the news of his passing.
A wave of tributes has flooded social media from fellow artists mourning his loss. Rapper Changmo shared heartfelt thanks for Wheesung's music, saying it profoundly affected his life. Additionally, other artists like Harisu and Yoon Min-soo expressed their condolences and sentiments of loss on social media. Many emphasized the legacy he leaves behind and the void his absence creates in the music world.
