Victoria Launches First Pill-Testing Service at Beyond the Valley Festival

Published December 28, 2024

Victoria has introduced its first-ever pill-testing service, allowing festival-goers to check their substances for harmful ingredients at the Beyond the Valley music festival.

The four-day festival commenced on Saturday at Barunah Plains, located southwest of Melbourne. This marks the first time the festival is participating in a drug-testing trial since the Victorian government passed the Pill Testing Bill in October.

About the Pill-Testing Service

The on-site drug testing at Beyond the Valley is capable of screening up to 200 substances daily, including pills and powders. This service will help attendees determine the legitimacy of their drugs, such as MDMA. The Premier of Victoria, Jacinta Allan, emphasized that the pill testing process is confidential, takes about 15 minutes, and is vital for saving lives.

Despite the testing service, Victoria Police will continue their operations at the festival, including the presence of drug-sniffing dogs. This increased focus on safety comes after a rise in drug overdoses at festivals earlier this year.

Community Support for Pill Testing

The introduction of pill testing is backed by research from the Department of Health, which states that pill testing does not increase drug use. Instead, it allows individuals to make informed and safer choices about their substances.

Studies from other countries, like the UK, have shown that festivals offering pill-testing services experience fewer medical incidents related to drug use. Furthermore, data from Australia's Capital Territory’s drug checking service reveals that only 53% of tested substances were as expected, highlighting the risks associated with unknown drug contents.

Nine other festivals will join this 18-month trial, potentially paving the way for regular pill-testing services at music events in Victoria.

Festival Highlights

This year’s Beyond the Valley festival features a lineup that includes popular Australian DJ Fisher, alongside US hip hop star Ice Spice and the iconic British pop group, the Sugababes. The festival also showcases a variety of performers, including UK drum and bass duo Chase & Status, Sydney’s Royal Otis, and R&B artist Tinashe.
