Jim Lindberg Revives The Black Pacific with New Album
Jim Lindberg, recognized as the lead singer of the punk band Pennywise, brings his energy to another project, The Black Pacific. Known for his powerful vocals and punk attitude, Lindberg had a successful run with The Black Pacific, which released its self-titled album in 2010.
After a long break, Lindberg and his longtime drummer, Alan Vega, have revived the band and released a new album titled "Here Comes Our Wave," marking the first album in 14 years. Along with the album, a new music video for the single "Best Day Ever" has also been released, showcasing Lindberg embracing a positive vibe even amidst chaotic scenes.
"I have probably two boxes of cassette tapes of songs I’ve written over the years that weren’t necessary right for Pennywise, so I just figured it’s now or never," Lindberg shared during a recent phone interview. He expressed the importance of getting back into the studio, describing how he started The Black Pacific after leaving Pennywise for a time to explore his own music.
Lindberg took on the challenge of writing and performing all the songs for the new album, with the exception of the drumming done by Vega. He played guitar, bass, and wrote all 11 tracks, a feat he finds fulfilling as it received a warm response from fans.
Musically, while Pennywise sticks closely to traditional punk rock, The Black Pacific's new album leans toward a pop-punk sound infused with grunge elements and deeper, introspective lyrics. Notably, the album includes a love song, a rarity in Lindberg’s songwriting, as he usually focuses on more aggressive themes.
"Pennywise has a pretty narrow target. We play very anthemic and sometimes political songs. Black Pacific allows me to explore other themes," he explained.
The single "Best Day Ever" carries an uplifting message despite its visuals showing the singer navigating through disastrous scenes. Lindberg describes the song as a post-punk anthem that deals with accepting one’s fate and maintaining a positive outlook through life’s ups and downs.
In addition to personal themes, the new album sees Lindberg addressing political issues, tackling topics like senseless violence in "I Think I’m Paranoid" and global unrest in "No Fun." Another track, "Here We Come," raises concerns about technology's impact on the future, particularly the threat of artificial intelligence.
As someone who keeps a close eye on current events, Lindberg stated, "I’m a complete news monger. I read every newspaper, watch shows, and listen to podcasts. I just try to share my views with my own twist on it." He has even written a love song titled "Float Away," which expresses a desire to escape from the stress of modern life with his wife.
When asked about his ideal "best day ever," Lindberg replied warmly, "Wake up and go for a surf, get some breakfast at Uncle Bills, hang out at the beach all day with my friends, and end it with a barbecue with loved ones while playing some music around the fire. That’s a perfect day."
