Universal Music Group and Amazon Strengthen Global Partnership
Universal Music Group (UMG) and Amazon have announced that they are expanding their global relationship. This partnership aims to create new opportunities and enhance products that will be beneficial for artists and improve experiences for fans.
The two companies expressed their intention to work closely together in various areas, including innovations in audio content. UMG will collaborate with Amazon as the latter grows its presence in audio, exploring advancements in audiobooks and live-streamed content, as well as audio-visual programming.
Combating Unlawful Content
In addition to product development, UMG and Amazon will address significant issues such as unlawful AI-generated content. They are committed to protecting artists from fraud and ensuring accurate attribution of their work.
Sir Lucian Grainge, UMG’s chairman and CEO, expressed excitement about strengthening the partnership, referring to a new phase in streaming as "Streaming 2.0." He noted Amazon Music's commitment to supporting artists' interests and looks forward to enhancing their shared focus on artist-friendly innovations.
Streaming 2.0 and Artist Value
UMG has previously indicated that their Streaming 2.0 strategy prioritizes increasing value rather than mere scale. This strategy includes offering various subscription levels and developing options for selling merchandise and products directly to fans.
Steve Boom, VP of Audio, Twitch, and Games for Amazon, commented on the partnership, emphasizing that UMG has always been a valuable collaborator. He stated that their expansion will aim to establish deeper connections between artists and fans globally and will work towards safeguarding the rights of artists, songwriters, and publishers.
Recent Developments in Licensing
This announcement closely follows UMG's new licensing agreement with TikTok, which aimed to improve compensation for their artists and songwriters while also providing innovative promotional opportunities. The previous agreement with TikTok ended earlier this year after UMG withdrew their music due to stalled negotiations.
Legal Issues with UMG and Drake
In other news, rapper Drake has recently initiated a second legal dispute with UMG, alleging defamation related to Kendrick Lamar's song 'Not Like Us'. It’s important to clarify that these actions are pre-action filings, meaning they aim to gather information for potential future lawsuits.
UMG has responded to the accusations, calling them "offensive and untrue" and affirming the company's commitment to ethical marketing practices. They emphasized that fans ultimately determine the music they choose to enjoy.
