20,000 Fans Evacuate Sydney Music Festival Amid Severe Storm

Published December 3, 2023

Attendees at the Good Things music festival in Sydney had to leave early after severe storms forced an unexpected end to the event. The music festival featured performances from high-profile American rock bands such as Limp Bizkit, Fall Out Boy, and Devo. Unfortunately, the extreme weather conditions led to the festival being called off prematurely, also affecting a nearby A-League soccer match which was also cut short.

Unexpected Turn of Weather

During Fall Out Boy's performance, only after a few songs, the audience was faced with an urgent message on the stage screens. It read a warning about the incoming thunderstorm, suggesting that attendees evacuate immediately and avoid seeking shelter under trees. While there was an initial hope that the festival would continue after the storm, it soon became apparent that the event would not be resuming.

Safety First

The festival organizers prioritized safety and, following advice from the New South Wales police and the state emergency service, the decision to evacuate the venue was made. The festival detailed this decision process through Instagram Stories with an explanation that was difficult to read due to the font choice but emphasized the focus on attendee safety.

The rapid response was supported by the Bureau of Meteorology's severe weather warning. The subsequent storm was intense, pouring down a month's worth of rain in a mere twenty minutes over Sydney. This sudden deluge of rain ultimately sealed the fate of the festival for the evening.
