Mel Gibson Appointed as Special Ambassador to Hollywood by Trump

Published January 18, 2025

Mel Gibson expressed his surprise upon learning that President-elect Donald Trump appointed him as a "special ambassador" to Hollywood. The famous star of Braveheart shared this news during an interview with Variety on January 17, 2025, where he stated he was ready to assist the new administration.

In his statement, Gibson said, "I got the tweet at the same time as all of you and was just as surprised. Nonetheless, I heed the call. My duty as a citizen is to give any help and insight I can." He humorously added, "Any chance the position comes with an Ambassador's residence?"

Trump made the announcement via the conservative social platform Truth Social, where he named Gibson as a "special ambassador" to Hollywood along with other well-known conservative actors, Jon Voight and Sylvester Stallone.

He stated, "It is my honor to announce Jon Voight, Mel Gibson, and Sylvester Stallone, to be Special Ambassadors to a great but very troubled place, Hollywood, California. They will serve as Special Envoys to me for the purpose of bringing Hollywood, which has lost much business over the last four years to Foreign Countries, BACK—BIGGER, BETTER, AND STRONGER THAN EVER BEFORE!"

Trump emphasized that these talented individuals would act as his "eyes and ears" in Hollywood and that they would play a crucial role in revitalizing the film industry. He noted, "It will again be, like The United States of America itself, The Golden Age of Hollywood!"

Jon Voight also shared his thoughts on the appointment. He expressed his hopes for Hollywood's revival by saying, "I'm old enough to have experienced the Golden Age of Hollywood firsthand, and I've witnessed its gradual decline over the years. Currently, we're facing significant challenges. But I believe we can restore Hollywood to its former grandeur with the support of our incoming President."

Beyond the excitement of the announcement, the entertainment industry has been through significant challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, extended strikes, and economic fluctuations. The exact responsibilities and powers that come with these ambassador positions are still unclear.

Gibson had previously shown support for Trump’s 2024 campaign. In a video captured by TMZ in October, he affirmed that it was a "pretty good guess" when asked about his backing for the Republican nominee, while also alluding to the consequences of electing Trump's opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris.
