Babyface's Red Carpet Interview Interrupts: A Lesson in Etiquette

Published February 3, 2025

Working the red carpet at events like the Grammys can be both exciting and chaotic, whether you are a reporter or a celebrity. For reporters, the pressure to get exclusive interviews can lead to awkward moments, as seen recently when Babyface was interrupted mid-interview.

This incident happened when the Associated Press reporters, Leslie Ambriz and Krysta Fauria, were interviewing the legendary music producer Babyface. They asked him about his views on modern R&B artists who blend different genres like pop and hip-hop into their music. Just as Babyface began to share his thoughts, one reporter suddenly turned her body away and shouted for Chappell Roan, a rising pop star who was behind them on the red carpet.

The moment was uncomfortable and felt disrespectful as Babyface's interview was cut off abruptly. After the shout, Babyface responded by saying, 'Go do that,' while visibly surprised and somewhat deflated as Roan was brought in. It was disheartening to witness a music icon like him being sidelined.

Red carpet etiquette matters. While the hustle for interviews can be intense, it is essential to respect the person speaking. For example, I recall a time at the red carpet for Jordan Peele’s film Nope, when I was interviewing Keke Palmer. Daniel Kaluuya, another star of the movie, was ushered by us, but I refrained from interrupting the interview. I understood the importance of respect in those interactions.

Despite being in the spotlight, Babyface has spent much of his career working behind the scenes as a songwriter and producer, creating unforgettable music with artists like Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, and Mariah Carey. His extensive work includes hits like 'I’ll Make Love to You' and 'We Belong Together'—songs that are beloved by many.

Babyface's contributions to the music industry are monumental, as he is a Grammy winner and co-founder of the influential R&B label LaFace Records alongside LA Reid. This incident highlights the need for respect towards artists who have paved the way in the music world.

Reporters on the red carpet deserve grace, and so do the artists. An atmosphere of mutual respect can lead to better interactions for everyone involved.
