Bob Dylan Bafflingly Posts Machine Gun Kelly Video on Instagram

Published February 28, 2025

Bob Dylan has sparked confusion and amusement among his fans after his Instagram account shared a video of Machine Gun Kelly, known as MGK, performing at a record store in Orlando, Florida, back in 2016.

The iconic singer-songwriter, now 83 years old, usually fills his social media with updates about his live performances or clips from classic films. However, on the evening of February 26, he took a different turn by posting a clip of MGK’s acoustic set at Park Ave CDs without any caption.

Machine Gun Kelly himself expressed his surprise over the post, calling it "so cool" and expressing gratitude for the unexpected recognition. Many others in the music community found joy in the post, with fellow artist Mod Sun declaring it "the best thing that’s ever happened on the internet." Some fans humorously suggested that Dylan might have mistaken MGK for actor Timothée Chalamet, commenting, "Bob probably thought this was Timothée Chalamet so he reposted it." Another fan joked, "Mom, Bob Dylan has the iPad again."

Further speculation arose around the post, with Pitchfork pondering whether Chalamet introduced Dylan to MGK’s music. Chalamet has often taken on MGK's persona in skits on Saturday Night Live, where he once humorously dubbed himself "a moisturised Machine Gun Kelly" while dressed as pop singer Troye Sivan.

Dylan has shown increased activity on social media recently. In November, he shared his admiration for Australian musician Nick Cave after attending his concert in Paris, specifically mentioning Cave's song "Joy." Additionally, his account left fans puzzled in September when it wished "Happy Birthday Mary Jo! See you in Frankfurt," prompting individuals to search for the identity of "Mary Jo" and the significance of the Frankfurt reference.

Meanwhile, Timothée Chalamet is nominated for a Best Actor Oscar for his role portraying Dylan in the upcoming film A Complete Unknown, competing against other actors like Adrien Brody and Colman Domingo. This biopic has garnered several nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director for James Mangold.

The Academy Awards ceremony is set to take place on Sunday, March 2.
