Retired Officer Discovers Treasure of Unreleased Michael Jackson Songs

Published December 14, 2024

A retired California highway patrol officer has made an exciting discovery: a treasure trove of unreleased songs by the late King of Pop, Michael Jackson, according to a report from Hollywood Reporter.

Former officer Gregg Musgrove found these recordings in a storage unit located in Van Nuys. The unit was purchased by a partner of Musgrove's, as noted in the report.

Interestingly, this storage unit previously belonged to music producer Bryan Loren, who has also collaborated with stars like Whitney Houston and Sting. However, Loren's current whereabouts are unknown.

Inside the storage unit, Musgrove uncovered 12 cassette tapes and digital audio tapes (DAT) containing 12 previously unreleased Jackson songs, which were recorded before the release of his Grammy-nominated album "Dangerous" in 1991.

Unfortunately for Jackson's many fans, an attorney hired by Musgrove reached out to the Jackson Estate, which manages the singer's legacy. He was informed that the estate holds all copyright rights to Jackson's recordings and compositions, meaning these songs cannot be made public.

The Jackson Estate further clarified to Hollywood Reporter that it also possesses the original tapes and that "nothing commercial or otherwise can be done with the DAT copies".

Among the tapes, there are recordings featuring Jackson and Loren engaged in discussions about the songs and the creative process. Musgrove expressed his excitement, stating, "Listening to Michael Jackson talk and joke was really great".

The collection includes a song titled "Don't Believe It," seemingly a reference to the allegations of sexual abuse against Jackson. Another track, "Truth on Youth," features Jackson appearing in a rap duet with LL Cool J.

Musgrove plans to offer the tapes to major auction houses, suggesting there may still be a way for fans to appreciate this part of Jackson's musical history.

In 2012, pop star Lady Gaga bought 55 pieces of memorabilia from Jackson, including one of his crystal-studded gloves. Additionally, a jacket worn by Jackson during his "Bad" tour sold for $240,000 at auction.
