Chris Martin's Unfortunate Trap Door Incident During Melbourne Concert

Published November 3, 2024

Coldplay's lead singer Chris Martin recently made headlines when he fell through an onstage trapdoor during a performance in Melbourne. This incident marks him as the second international star to experience such a mishap in recent weeks, following singer Olivia Rodrigo.

The fall occurred during Coldplay's fourth concert of their Music of the Spheres tour at Marvel Stadium, leaving the audience gasping in surprise. Footage taken by fans shows Martin walking backwards while addressing signs from the crowd, unaware of the open trapdoor behind him until it was too late.

Fortunately, a technician stationed below was quick to respond and managed to catch the 47-year-old just in time, preventing what could have been a serious fall.

In the immediate aftermath, Martin humorously remarked, "That’s uh…not planned," showing his good spirits despite the unexpected event. He expressed gratitude to the technician, saying, "Thank you for catching me."

Fans had the opportunity to view the incident from various angles, preserving the moment for posterity.

After the fall, Martin seamlessly transitioned back into the performance, making light of the situation in order to reassure the worried crowd. Besides the unexpected slip, Martin also took a moment to honor his late friend, cricketer Shane Warne. He said, "Let’s play this for Shane and his family. Our brother, we miss you. Every time we come to Melbourne, it used to be fun to hang out with Shane and all the Warne family. I don’t want to talk about it too much or I’ll start to cry."

Similar to Martin's fall, Olivia Rodrigo faced a trapdoor incident earlier in the month while performing at the Rod Laver Arena, another major venue in Melbourne. She too managed to recover quickly and continued her show without injuries.

With two prominent artists experiencing trapdoor falls in such a short time frame, one might suggest a review of stage safety measures at these venues.
