Billboard Issues Apology to Taylor Swift After Fan Backlash

Published November 28, 2024

Billboard has publicly apologized to Taylor Swift and its audience for including a clip that misrepresented the singer in a tribute video meant to celebrate her achievements.

Tribute to Taylor Swift

On November 26, Billboard announced that Taylor Swift was ranked as the second greatest pop star of the 21st century. To honor this achievement, the magazine shared a compilation of past footage and clips from Swift’s music videos. Unfortunately, one of the clips shown was a brief excerpt from Kanye West's controversial music video for his 2016 hit "Famous." This particular video featured a sculpture of Swift in a compromising position.

Backlash from Fans

The inclusion of this clip sparked immediate outrage among fans, who quickly took to social media to express their discontent. Comments such as "This is disgusting" flooded Twitter, and the hashtags #BillboardIsOverParty and #BillboardApologizeToTaylor began trending as fans called for a formal apology.

Billboard's Response

In light of the negative feedback, Billboard removed the controversial clip and uploaded a revised version of the video on Instagram. They issued a statement that read, "We are deeply sorry to Taylor Swift and all of our readers and viewers that in a video celebrating Swift's achievements, we included a clip that falsely depicted her. We have removed the clip from our video and sincerely regret the harm we caused with this error."

The History Behind the Controversy

The original song that the clip came from, "Famous," was released amidst a highly publicized feud between Swift and West. The lyrics of the song included a provocative line about Swift that led her to highlight the misogynistic undertones and assert that she never consented to being called derogatory names in the song.

In their feud, reality star Kim Kardashian, who was married to West at the time, released a recording that seemed to show Swift agreeing to the lyrics. Many criticized Swift, labeling her a liar. However, in 2020, an unedited version of the call was leaked, revealing that West did not inform her of those specific lyrics.

Swift's Personal Impact

In a recent interview with Time magazine in 2023, Swift reflected on how the entire incident had affected her life significantly. She stated, "Make no mistake — my career was taken away from me." She described the emotional toll it took, leading her to isolation and trust issues.
