Golden Globes Nominations Cause Outrage Over Director Snubs

Published December 9, 2024

The nominations for the Golden Globes 2025 have been announced, and while some expected nominees received recognition, several significant snubs have left fans upset.

Mindy Kaling and Morris Chestnut revealed the nominees earlier today, leading up to the ceremony scheduled for January 5.

This year, the film Emilia Pérez topped the nominations with an impressive total of 10 nods. The leading actors Karla Sofía Gascón, Zoe Saldaña, and Selena Gomez were recognized, with Gomez also nominated for her role in Only Murders in the Building.

Ariana Grande received her first Golden Globe nomination for her performance as Glinda in Wicked, and shares a nomination with her co-star Cynthia Erivo, who is recognized in the best performance in a musical or comedy category.

However, not everyone was pleased with the nominations. Many were shocked to see director Jon M. Chu, who directed the blockbuster Wicked that has grossed over $450 million, left out of the Best Director category. Similarly, Denis Villeneuve, director of the acclaimed film Dune: Part Two, also received no nomination. Instead, the best director nominations went to Jacques Audiard, Sean Baker, Edward Berger, Brady Corbet, Coralie Fargeat, and Payal Kapadia.

Fans took to social media to express their frustration. Some were particularly vocal about Jon M. Chu’s omission, with many users tweeting their disbelief. Tercia da Silva tweeted: ‘Jon Chu not being nominated has officially ruined my day #GoldenGlobes.’ Elizabeth M echoed the sentiment: ‘Wait-did the #GoldenGlobes completely neglect to nominate Jon M. Chu???? Seriously????’ Others emphasized the injustice felt over Denis Villeneuve’s lack of recognition, mentioning it should be illegal.

Despite the snubs, Dune: Part Two received nominations for Best Original Score and Best Motion Picture (Drama), but Villeneuve along with lead actors Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya were not acknowledged.

Critics of the nominations also pointed to the notable absence of Marianne Jean-Baptiste. After her success at various critics' awards for her role in Hard Truths, fans were disappointed that she did not receive a nomination.

The television nominations brought some highlights as well. The Bear received five nominations, including Best Comedy Series, with standout performances recognized for actors Jeremy Allen White and Ayo Edebiri. Moreover, Selena Gomez is nominated for her roles in both Emilia Pérez and Only Murders in the Building, sharing the spotlight with her co-stars Martin Short and Steve Martin.

As the anticipation builds for the Golden Globes ceremony, fans will be eager to see the outcome of these controversial nominations and how the awards will play out on January 5, 2025.
