Burna Boy Makes History at the 2023 Billboard Music Awards
The 2023 Billboard Music Awards, which took place on November 19, introduced a new wave of recognition for Afrobeats music, proudly spotlighting Nigerian artists Burna Boy and Rema for their outstanding contributions to the genre.
Burna Boy's Historic Win
In a groundbreaking moment for Afrobeats, Burna Boy clinched the title of Top Afrobeats Artist, marking his place in history as the inaugural winner of this new award category. He triumphed over fellow nominees including Wizkid, Rema, Tems, and Cameroonian sensation Libianca.
Rema's 'Calm Down' Remix Leads the Afrobeats Scene
The remix of Rema's hit 'Calm Down' featuring Selena Gomez was another highlight of the night, taking home the award for Top Afrobeats Song. In its victory, the song surpassed competing tracks such as Ayra Starr’s ‘Rush’, Oxlade’s ‘Ku Lo Sa’, Libianca’s ‘People’, and Victony’s collaboration 'Soweto' with Rema and Don Toliver.
Despite its triumph, the 'Calm Down' remix faced stiff competition in other categories, indicating the increasing global appeal and reach of Afrobeats music.
