The 2023 Billboard Music Awards, which took place on November 19, introduced a new wave of recognition for Afrobeats music, proudly spotlighting Nigerian artists Burna Boy and Rema for their outstanding contributions to the genre.

Burna Boy's Historic Win

In a groundbreaking moment for Afrobeats, Burna Boy clinched the title of Top Afrobeats Artist, marking his place in history as the inaugural winner of this new award category. He triumphed over fellow nominees including Wizkid, Rema, Tems, and Cameroonian sensation Libianca.

Rema's 'Calm Down' Remix Leads the Afrobeats Scene

The remix of Rema's hit 'Calm Down' featuring Selena Gomez was another highlight of the night, taking home the award for Top Afrobeats Song. In its victory, the song surpassed competing tracks such as Ayra Starr’s ‘Rush’, Oxlade’s ‘Ku Lo Sa’, Libianca’s ‘People’, and Victony’s collaboration 'Soweto' with Rema and Don Toliver.

Despite its triumph, the 'Calm Down' remix faced stiff competition in other categories, indicating the increasing global appeal and reach of Afrobeats music.

Additional Highlights from the Awards

Apart from the Afrobeats category wins, the awards ceremony saw American singer Morgan Wallen earning the most accolades, with a total of 11 awards. Taylor Swift also had a significant showing, securing 10 wins herself, indicating a diverse range of success across different music genres at this year's event.
